What is Damp?
There are 3 types of damp that affect homes:
Rising Damp:
Moisture travels upward from the ground through walls by capillary action, like a sponge slowly drinking from the earth. It usually appears at ground-floor level and can cause tide marks, peeling paint, crumbling plaster, and salt deposits.
Penetrating Damp:
Water pushes its way in from outside due to defects such as cracked walls, leaking roofs, damaged gutters, or faulty window seals. It often shows as isolated damp patches that worsen after rain.
Condensation Damp:
The most common type. Warm, moist indoor air meets cold surfaces like windows or exterior walls, forming water droplets. Over time, this creates black mould growth, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms with poor ventilation.
Why Deal With Damp?
Health problems:
Moist environments encourage mold growth, which can trigger asthma, allergies, coughing, skin irritation, and other respiratory issues. Prolonged exposure to damp and mold spores can especially affect children, older adults, and people with existing lung conditions.
Structural damage:
Persistent moisture can weaken walls, ceilings, timber, and foundations. It can cause wood rot, plaster damage, peeling paint, and even long-term structural instability, if left untreated.
Increased heating costs:
Damp air is harder to heat than dry air, making homes feel colder and leading to higher energy bills.
Unpleasant living conditions:
Damp often causes musty odours, staining, condensation on windows, and an overall uncomfortable environment.
In short, damp isn’t just cosmetic—it affects health, safety, comfort, and property value.
